Cultivating the Mind and Heart: The Journey of the Book Circle

The Book Circle began in 2019, born from the vision of passionate members at Zion Serangoon Bible-Presbyterian Church (ZSBPC) who desired to see the congregation grow in spiritual maturity through reading. What started as a modest initiative has since blossomed into a multi-faceted ministry that bridges the gap between traditional page-turning and modern digital access, all while maintaining a singular focus on the edification of the body of Christ.

A Culture of Generous Reading

From its earliest days, the Book Circle was founded on a refreshing principle of trust and generosity: "take and no need to return". This philosophy allowed for the physical circulation of books by esteemed Christian authors, removing the barriers often associated with traditional lending libraries. Today, this spirit of open access continues, with 400 to 500 physical titles remaining available on unlocked shelves within the church. Notably, these resources are not restricted to the congregation but are open to all visitors and members alike, reflecting a commitment to shared learning and hospitality.

To ensure that the resources provided are both nourishing and doctrinally sound, the ministry’s selections are intentionally guided by a Reformed theological perspective. This commitment ensures that every book, whether physical or digital, serves to deepen a reader's understanding of God’s Word in alignment with the historical Christian faith.

Bridging the Digital Divide with Libby

In 2025, the ministry embraced the digital age with the launch of the Zion e-library, selecting 'Libby' as the primary platform for its ease of use and accessibility. This platform has significantly expanded the ministry’s reach, offering over 1,000 ebooks and audiobooks. Recognising the diverse interests of readers, the system also allows users to request specific titles that may not yet be in the permanent collection. Access is simple and inclusive, with e-library cards issued upon request.

A Resource for the Global Church

The impact of the Book Circle is not confined to the local community. In a beautiful expression of regional partnership, the e-library has been made available to the leaders of Zion’s foreign mission partners in Cambodia and the Philippines. By sharing these digital resources, the ministry provides vital theological and devotional support to pastoral leaders in these regions, helping to strengthen the global church through quality literature.

The Burden of the Ministry

While the percentage of active readers is modest relative to the size of the congregation, the "burden" or core mission of the Book Circle remains steadfast. The goal is not merely to increase literacy, but to enrich the hearts and minds of believers, guiding them toward a more profound and intimate understanding of the Bible.
