We Bible-Presbyterians have laid low for a while. We did things we are not proud of. Like breaking up when we could not get along. But after 30 years, we are coming together again, learning from past mistakes, recovering what was once our good heritage. “Speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15) is our commitment. God helping us, we seek to be faithful in proclaiming truth and demonstrating love.

Pastors Wives Fellowship

Every year, BPCIS holds a retreat for pastors and leaders. The 2019 theme was Loneliness. “Who could be more lonely than the wives of pastors?” remarked a veteran pastor. That year we decided to include wives at our retreat. As Dr Tan Soo Inn spoke to the men, his wife Bernice Lee met with the women. Here is what happened that led to the inaugural BP Pastors’ Wives gathering on 1 July 2023.

BPCIS Pastors’ & Church Leaders’ Seminar:
“Semper Reformanda!”

This popular slogan from the 17th century Europe is still relevant today in 21st century Singapore! For this reason, forty BPCIS pastors and church leaders came together to learn how our churches can keep reforming.

Dr. Tim LeCroy, pastor and professor, brought both academic learning and ministry experience to help us do just that at a seminar held on 31 October, sponsored by BPCIS.

We are presently 11 member churches, working together with other observer churches, to devote ourselves to prayer, build bridges and strengthen our churches for the next generations. Baby Zeddie's Story: A Journey of Loss, Grief and Hope

“In all the years I’ve walked up those steps to stand behind this pulpit, I’ve never wanted to do this any less than tonight.” Pastor Vernon Quek agonised as he looked down upon the small white casket holding the lifeless body of Baby Zeddie. “It is so wrong that coffins are made in this size. It just shouldn’t be so.”

“And yet,” he continued, “if there’s anything that Ruth and I want you to know tonight, to know in all of this wrongness…is that God is Good. Even as the lifeless body of our son lies so still in front of us – God is Good.”

How could this be so? Priscilla Tee speaks to Ruth about the difficult 10-month journey she went through when she learned during her pregnancy that their third child had been diagnosed with Anencephaly.

Devoting to Prayer

In November last year we began our monthly zoom prayer, every third Wednesday at 3pm-3.30pm. BPCIS pastors will bring needs of our churches and pray for one another. Our Good Friday Service on 15 April will focus on the Gethsemane Prayer of Jesus, “…not my will, but yours, be done….” (Luke‬ ‭22:42‬ ) with guest speaker Pastor Ivan Chow of Bethesda Bukit Arang. A series of devotions on that theme will be featured on our Website leading to Good Friday.

Building Bridges

In our last Update, we announce the happy news that Grace BP Church joined BPCIS as our 9th member church. God willing, another BP church will join soon as 10th church. We will continue to build bridges to BP churches which are not part of a Presbytery yet. In this regard, we are glad to hear of a second Presbytery being formed with Life, New Life, Calvary-Jurong and Sharon BP Churches. We call on all BP churches to prayerfully consider being part of a Presbytery if they call themselves Presbyterian.

Strengthening our Churches

This will be the theme of our Pastors & Leaders Retreat this year, held 4-5 July, at Changi Cove. Pastor Denesh Divyanathan of The Crossing Church will be our speaker. As part of our bridge-building, we will be extending invitation to churches not part of BPCIS. God continues to strengthen our churches through the ordination of men to the ministry. Three are now on ordination tracks: Paul Yeo and Ng Zhiwen (Zion Bishan) and Elder David Leong (Emmanuel).

Editorial: Section 377A

By now, the government and the public have been made aware of the positions and concerns of the Christian community in Singapore over the repeal of Section 377A. Statements have been issued by different Christian councils and denominational bodies. Our Pastoral Word addresses the flocks under our care, and draws our attention to four main areas for urgent prayer and action.
